Rubel takes six as Bangladesh win

Dhaka: Rubel Hossain took career-best six wickets, including a hat-trick, handed Bangladesh a 43-run win by the Duckworth-Lewis method over New Zealand in the first one-day international series on Tuesday.

Bangladesh started badly, losing three wickets with just on 25 on the board after New Zealand invited them to set a target.

Skipper Mushfiqur Rahim then came in and paired with Naeem to dig the hosts out of the hole with a fourth-wicket partnership of 154 runs.

Kiwi pacer James Neesham broke the partnership in the 37th over.

Mushfiq fell 10 runs short of what would have been his second ODI hundred, edging a slower one outside off to the wicketkeeper while Naeem perished on 84 edging a similar delivery from Tim Southee to Brendon McCullum with the score on 232 for six.

The next four wickets went for only 33 runs as the hosts reached 265 all out in 49.5 overs.

Chasing the total, New Zealand had their first hiccup in the fourth over on 9 when Sohag Gazi’s flighted delivery spun in to crash the leg stump of Hamish Rutherford who made only one.

The visitors lost two more before rain hit the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka to halt play for over an hour.

The Kiwis’ innings was cut to 33 overs and their new target was set at 206 as they resumed their play with the score on 82 for three.

Rubel came into action in the 24th over to send back Corey Anderson, Brendon McCullum and James Neesham in three consecutive deliveries.

Anderson misread a slower to be bowled for 46 while skipper McCullum (0) ended up giving a catch to Shamsur Rahman at point as he tried to fend a short delivery to off.

Neesham, who took four wickets for the Kiwis in the first innings, edged a good length delivery back to the wicket-keeper.

Rubel picked up another two quick wickets, including Grant Elliott (71), to bundle the visitors out for 162.

The second match of the series will be played at the same venue on Oct 31.
