Dhaka: The daylong bus strike, sparked by the murder of a
transport leader, has been curtailed until noon.
The announcement came as a relief to the city dwellers, especially the students appearing Junior School Certificate and equivalent examinations, who scrambled for bus since morning to commute.
Dhaka Sarak Paribahan Samity General Secretary Enayet Ullah confirmed that they have truncated the strike.
“We have decided to end the strike at 12pm considering plights of the public and students appearing different exams today (Friday),” said Enayet.
City-dwellers’ weekend morning has been ruined as the city buses were off the road in response to the strike. Long distance-buses too are grounded.
Dhaka Sarak Paribahan Samity called the strike hours after Sayedabad Transport Owners Association General Secretary Khairul Molla, was stabbed to death at the capital’s Motijheel on Thursday evening by unidentified miscreants.
Molla was also the Organising Secretary of the Awami League’s Demra unit. The motives behind the murder were not immediately known.
