Dhaka: Jamaat-e-Islami will not be able to contest elections as a
political party after the High court scrapped its registration, an Election
Commissioner has said.
The High Court on Aug 1 declared the party's registration 'illegal and void'.
Election Commissioner Shah Nawaz made the announcement on Thursday, a day after getting copy of the full verdict.
It is the first time an election commissioner has commented on the issue since the High Court's verdict.
"Jamaat's registration has been cancelled by the court's order. It is not registered anymore," Shah Nawaz said.
As a party, Jamaat had opposed Bangladesh’s independence and many of its leaders are facing trials or have been convicted by the war crimes tribunals.
"It will not be able to contest polls for the time being," he said.
